The Blue Moon is named after the song "Blue Moon" which was written by Rogers and Hart. The name was changed by Merv Griffin, the famous talk show host, who owned the hotel at the time and was a big fan of Rogers and Hart".

The hotel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a happy union of two hotels -- the Art Deco-style Lafayette and the Mediterranean-style Les Suites, now bridged by an arched breezeway. Both architectural styles remain intact, thanks to the stringent standards and oversight of the Miami Beach Design Review Board. The results of the renovation that united the two buildings is Art Deco features such as terrazzo floors blending with the arched windows of the Mediterranean style.

Today, the hotel continues to make history.
